A 30 minute 5K pace is 6:00 per km, or 9:39 per mile. To finish under 30:00 you need an average slightly faster than that. At an even pace you pass 1 km in 6:00, 3 km in 18:00 and 4 km in 24:00, and a 400 m track lap takes 2:24.
The tool below is set to a 5K in 30:00. Change the goal to test another time, or choose a negative split to run the second half faster. Below the tool are the treadmill speed, the easy pace for a 30:00 5K and the longer race times that match it.
Everything is calculated in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded, and the tool is free with no account or sign-up.

How to use the pace tool for this goal
- Check that Race is set to 5K.
- Goal time is already 30:00. Type another time to see its pace and splits.
- Pick Pacing: Even, Negative split or Positive split. For the last two, set Difference between halves (%).
- Choose miles or km with the Units switch. Every pace and distance changes with it.
- Read the average pace and the split table: each row has the split time and the elapsed time.
- Use Print splits for a paper copy or Copy link to keep the exact result.
The split table has two columns that are easy to mix up. Split time is how long that one mile or km takes. Elapsed is the clock reading when you reach it, and it is the column to compare with your watch during the race. To compare goals, change only Goal time and watch the average pace and the Elapsed column update; nothing else needs resetting. Make a pace band for this time opens the pace band generator with the same race and goal. The tables scroll sideways inside their box on a small screen.
Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded. Settings stay in the page address, so a copied link opens with the same goal. Prefer your phone? There is a RunPacePlan app for Android, with the iPhone version coming soon.
What are the splits for a 30-minute 5K?
In kilometres the splits are 6:00 each, so you reach 1 km at 0:06:00, 2 km at 0:12:00, 3 km at 0:18:00 and 4 km at 0:24:00. In miles you reach mile 1 at 0:09:39, mile 2 at 0:19:19 and mile 3 at 0:28:58, with the last 0.1 mile to the line. The table in the tool has every row.
What is the lap time for a 30-minute 5K on a 400 m track?
A 400 m lap takes 2:24 at 6:00 per km, and a 5K is 12.5 laps. Run 12 laps and half a lap, and the clock should read 30:00 at the finish. On a treadmill the same pace is 10.0 km/h, or 6.2 mph; the mph to minutes per mile converter turns any belt speed into a pace.
What easy pace goes with a 30 minute 5K?
For a 30:00 5K the easy pace is 12:26 to 14:04 per mile (7:44 to 8:44 per km), the long run 11:54 to 13:31, threshold 10:01 per mile (6:13 per km) and interval 9:03 per mile. Easy runs are meant to be slower than race pace, which is why they sit well behind 9:39.
Which longer times match a 30-minute 5K?
A 30:00 5K matches a 10K of about 1:02:23, a half marathon of 2:18:10 and a marathon of 4:43:39. These are estimates of equal fitness from the Daniels and Gilbert equations. Longer races also need the mileage behind them, so read them as an upper limit.
How do I get from Couch to 5K to a 30-minute 5K?
Week 9 of the Couch to 5K plan ends with 30 minutes of running, and its pace box shows how far you cover in that time at your own easy pace. If that comes out near 5 km, a 30-minute 5K is close; if it is shorter, the same box shows how long 5K takes at your pace. Then add a little faster running a week at a time.
Should I run even or negative splits for a 5K?
Even splits mean 6:00 for every km. With a negative split and a 2% gap the first half takes 15:09 and the second 14:51, still 30:00 in total. A 5K is short enough that most runners go out too fast and pay for it in the last kilometre, so a first km of 6:00 to 6:10 is a sensible target if you are chasing the 30-minute mark. Set Pacing to compare the versions.
Who is a 30-minute 5K for?
It suits a runner who has finished Couch to 5K and can jog 30 minutes at a steady effort, or a returning runner who wants a first round-number goal. Your own history is the guide.
What mistakes cost people a 30-minute 5K?
Running the first kilometre at 5:30 because the crowd is fast, then fading. Using a watch that reads the 5K long or short, so the splits disagree with the course markers. Treating 30:00 as sub-30: finishing at 29:59 needs a pace just under 6:00 per km, and there is no cushion if the course measures a few metres long.
How does 30 minutes compare with 25 and 35 minutes?
A 25:00 5K is 5:00 per km (8:03 per mile) and a 35:00 5K is 7:00 per km (11:16 per mile). So 30:00 sits in the middle at 6:00 per km. Every minute off the 5K is 12 seconds a km (19 seconds a mile). The 5K pace chart lists them all.
How this tool works and where the numbers come from
Pace is the finish time divided by the distance (5 km, or 3.1069 miles). Treadmill speed is 60 divided by the pace in minutes per km. Training paces and matching race times use the Daniels and Gilbert (1979) oxygen-cost equations with RunPacePlan’s own zone definitions.

Frequently asked questions
What pace do I need to run a 5K in 30 minutes?
6:00 per km or 9:39 per mile on average. To finish under 30:00, be slightly faster than that from the first km.
Is a 30-minute 5K good?
It depends on your age, your training and your starting point, so compare it with your own earlier races. The pace is a steady jog for many people and takes real training if you are new to running.
What treadmill speed is a 30-minute 5K?
10.0 km/h, which is 6.2 mph. Use the converter linked above for any other belt speed.
How fast should the first kilometre be?
Aim for 6:00 to 6:10. The even splits show 6:00 as the target, and a much faster first kilometre is a familiar reason a 30-minute goal slips in the last one.
How long does a 5K take at other paces?
The time is the pace multiplied by 5 km. At 6:00 per km it is 30:00; at 7:00 per km it is 35:00; at 5:00 per km it is 25:00. Set the goal time in the tool to see the splits for each.
Does the tool use miles or km?
Either. The Units switch changes every pace and distance on the page, and your choice is remembered in this browser.
Is this medical or coaching advice?
No. The paces are calculated from a goal time. Build up gradually and ask a doctor first if you have a health condition.
